How do I choose the right comforter?
Do you want to buy a duvet? Then it is useful to think in advance about the type of duvet you are looking for. Do you prefer a down duvet or do you prefer a filling of synthetic material? And do you want a single duvet or a four-season quilt? Do you quickly get cold at night and are you looking for an extra hot one? Or is an airy duvet enough? And then of course there is also the format that you have to take into account. The possibilities in the field of duvets are almost endless. That is why you will find information and advice below to make your choice easier.
Two types of duvets
Duvets can be divided into two types: you can opt for a single duvet and a four seasons duvet. A single duvet consists of one layer and can be used all year round. A 4-season duvet consists of two separate duvets that can be used separately and at the same time. You can use one duvet during the summer months, the other is suitable for autumn and spring. In the winter you can use both duvets together, so you have a nice and warm bed.
The heat class of duvets
Duvets are divided into four heat classes, which indicate how warm a duvet is. The need for heat in bed is of course different for everyone, making the choice for a certain heat class very personal. In the overview below you will find more information about the four heat classes:
- CLASS 4: The duvets from class 4 are the most thin and airy duvets. They are also called summer duvets. They are ideal for use during warm summer nights and in warm bedrooms. Do you warm up quickly at night? Then a class 4 quilt is an excellent choice. Even in the summer, these duvets generally remain cool to the touch.
- CLASS 3: A class 3 comforter is suitable for spring and autumn. Also in late summer, when the temperatures drop, you will sleep comfortably under a duvet of heat class 3. These quilts can be used in a well-heated bedroom and are suitable for people who warm up quickly at night.
- CLASS 2: The comforters of heat class 2 can be used all year round. These are ideal for bedrooms where the temperature is moderate throughout the year.
- CLASS 1: The class 1 quilts have the highest heat insulation. These are therefore ideal for people who quickly get cold at night. Also during the winter months a duvet from class 1 is indispensable in the bedroom.
The right filling for your duvet
There are various options for the filling of a duvet. For example, you can choose a duvet that is filled with down, but you can also opt for a synthetic duvet or a wool duvet. The different types all have their own advantages and disadvantages. Below you can read more about down duvets and synthetic duvets, so you can easily choose a duvet that suits you. Advantages and disadvantages of a down duvet A down duvet offers excellent insulation. The soft filling of down and feathers is not only wonderfully warm, but also ventilates well. Down is usually mixed with feathers. With a quilt, therefore, it is always stated which percentage of down is used. The higher this percentage, the lighter and smoother the quilt feels. The percentage of down is between 15% and 100%. The best down duvets have a down percentage that is between 65% and 95%. The higher the percentage of down, the higher the price of the duvet. Down duvets therefore have the advantage that they offer optimal insulation and feel light. The disadvantage is that they are quite pricey. A synthetic duvet: advantages and disadvantages Synthetic duvets are filled with microfibres or a kind of balls (hollow fiber), which are usually made of polyester. These duvets are suitable for use as an anti-allergy duvet for people with a house dust mite allergy. A synthetic duvet can be washed at high temperature in the washing machine, causing the house dust mite to die. Synthetic duvets are not as ventilating as other types, but are the most economical choice. In addition, they feel light and are maintenance-friendly.
